Tennis

It’s Wimbledon time again ... each year about this time, a big tennis tournament takes place in London, which lasts for two weeks.  Whether you have any interest in Tennis or not, you will likely hear and see quite a lot about this tournament if you happen to be in UK or Ireland … in fact, you could be forgiven for thinking this is the only Tennis tournament that takes place on earth …

When we were growing up on the Ryan Road, Wimbledon always seemed to coincide with cleaning up around the outside of the house  while we waited for the crops to grow and  Summer visitors to arrive.  Of course we had no TV, but since we were seriously interested in ALL sports then, we listened to the amazing pictures painted by BBC radio commentators … “Newcombe serves from the left hand court, Laver returns with heavy back-spin, forehand  lob from Newcombe,  Laver runs back,  slices it to Newcombe’s  backhand, Newcombe volleys down the line … and so on … while we white-washed the stone walls and dug grass from our “centre court” which ran the whole length of the lane, from the front gate to the Fairy Thorn  … and developed incredible imaginations in the midst of whitewash, rushes and ragweeds.
